Nokia 9300i
Nokia has introduced a Wi-Fi enabled 9300i model nicknamed the "Communicator", an upgrade to the company's existing 9300 communicator to match the functionality of the considerably larger 9500. The WiFi capability enables data connection for downloading large files and/or email attachments. The 9300i has an MMC slot to expand the memory up to 2GB—perfect for powerpoint files, spreadsheets, presentations and large scale word documents. It also includes tri-band GSM support and EDGE along with Infrared and Bluetooth for short-range connectivity, and WLAN 802.11g, five-party conference calling via an integrated speakerphone and multiple email clients. As with the original 9300, the 9300i will be available in two versions, Europe and Asia supports the GSM bands, and the other for the Americas, both modles will feature Wi-Fi 802.11g connectivity for transfer speeds of up to 54 Mbps. The 9300i still looks like the 9300, while lighter and smaller than the the 9500.

Featuring 80 MB of on-board memory as well as the ability to further add 2 GB courtesy of the built-in MMC card expansion slot, the 9300i also features a 65K colour widescreen display with a resolution of 640 x 200 pixels. The 9300i also offers a similarly wide QWERTY thumbboard available in several localized versions and an external numerical keypad and display for phone style use. To compete against other similar devices ( such as the Sony Ericsson P990, O2 XDA Exec and T-Mobile MDA Pro,) the 9300 will offer support for push e-mail solutions including BlackBerry Connect, IBM WebSphere, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Seven Always-On Mail and Visto Mobile. Planned for release Q1 2006, the Nokia 9300i is expected to sell around 700 Euros.

Samsung SPH A660
This model promises, when used via the Sprint "enhanced" Nationwide PCS Network, all of the following features: messaging, games, ringers, screensavers, web, and PCS Business Connection to Outlook, Lotus Notes, or your company's email, contacts, and calendars etc. It also claims "crystal-clear" sound on the continental US. The reality is one or two steps removed. It ships with a CD-Rom including a video commercial that we couldn't stop playing in the background - and most of the unhelpful links within the CD-Rom drove us to Sprint's website which is as impenetrable as String Theory.

The unlock procedure and password setting was swift and painless, and to Samsung's credit, the Lithium Ion battery lifespan is impressive, Analog standby time is up to 16 hours - while continuous talk is promised for 5.6 hours. Roaming on other analog and other 800 and 1900 MHz digital networks keeps this handset viable almost everywhere we took (with the exception of some rural parts of Maine!). The Phone book also up to 300 entries, with up to six tel numbers per entry (home, office, mobile etc.) but is a serious chore filling with data manually.

However, using PCS Voice Command their product manual claims space for 500 names in your personal address book, with each name having up to five phone numbers. That's 2,500 phone numbers, and with the advanced technology of PCS Voice Command, you can have instant access to all of them. There are four ways to update your address book: by using Voice Recordings, dial and say, "Add name." Then you will be asked to say the name and number you want to add to your personal address book. The address book can store up to 20 voice recorded names at once. Then to manage your outgoing calls, you can simply say the name of the person you want to call, and call them. Address books can be merged from deesktop software applications with Sprint Sync Services, by clicking on the "Click to synchronize" button within the PCS Voice Command personal address book at www.talk.sprintpcs.com.

We were not very impressed with the audio quality of the handset, it's very skewed to upper frequencies, and "crackly" sounding, leading one to use this for emergencies rather than as a conversational tool. The slim clam-shell design, and light 3.5 oz. weight makes this cell phone extremely easy to pocket and ignore while not in use.
